One of the reasons why this situation exists is because police officers are in such a difficult and sometimes hostile environment. In order for them to work well, it helps when they have the assurance that other officers will have their back if something happens. Since the world of police work is unpredictable, it helps police have peace of mind when they know that the other officers will help them in external and internal investigations by keeping silent. According to Hall (2002) there are eight reasons why the Code of Silence exists. Here are a few:: With this information in mind it is easy to see why this Code of Silence is an integral part of law enforcement. The interesting issue about this is that each officer decides how much of this they will do and it is usually based on their own moral code of ethics. In research done by The National Institute of Ethics in 2000, it was found that 52% of officers were not bothered by the Code of Silence (as quoted in Hall, p. 3). In other words, they were fine with it. Hall also suggests that the root of this comes from the fact that we were told as children not to tell on our siblings and the fact that we were punished if we did. Walker (2001), in his book on police accountability says that the reason this Code of Silence exists is because "officers learned that there was no risk of punishment for backing up fellow officers responses no matter how credible the tale." (Walker, p. 109). Another issue that comes up for officers is that some have compassion for people who have experienced brutal crimes. Because of this, they may begin to think that since the public wants to get rid of an individual like this, whatever they do to get rid of the individual will be seen as the right thing to do. Police Brutality Essay Unfortunately, nowadays the people who are supposed to protect us and help us when we are in need, sometimes cannot be trusted. Police brutality has always been a problem, but theres been a dramatic rise in police murders and brutalization of citizens. Police Brutality is anything from harassment from a police officer to being murdered by one.Police officers risk their lives everyday they put on their uniform. They serve the community by keeping it safe from those who break the law. Police are trained to use force when necessary and to have discretion on how much force to use on someone. The tactics they use are to apprehend a criminal, and to keep those who are around a criminal, safe. Officers carry weapons such as a baton, mace, or a gun. These weapons are to keep themselves and the communities they serve safe. Sometimes officers who are either not properly trained or who neglect to use the appropriate amount of force on a suspect, can suffer the consequences of police brutality. â€Å"Police brutality is a civil rights violation that occurs when a police officer acts with excessive force by using an amount of force with regards to a civilian that is more than necessary. Excessive force by a law enforcement officers is a violation of a persons rights. Force should be used in only the minimum amount needed to achieve a purpose. Police brutality is a direct violation of the laws within the police force. The use of excessive force is also a direct violation of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S Constitution regarding cruelty and protection of the laws†(definitions.uslegal.com). One of the major causes of police brutality is stress. Each day, police officers have to deal with the fact that their lives are within their own hands and being that they are thought of as the enemy by a criminal they feel the need to protect themselves at any cost. An officer may feel threatened and might not know his or her own strength, therefore they might  do anything to protect themselves if they feel threatened. The stress of being a cop can lead to other issues other than police brutality. The amount of stress of their job is so high it can affect them in various ways later in life. â€Å"The extreme stress and pressure placed on police officers has caused an increasing numbers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder cases, alcoholism, suicide, early retirement, breakdowns and burnout being reported by police officers across the country†(www.essortment.com). Another cause of police brutality is simply abuse of power. Not all cops break the rules, but not all cops follow t hem. Police brutality can be any of the following acts; â€Å"profane or abusive language, commands to move or go home, field stops and searches, threats of implied violence, prodding with a nightstick or approaching with a pistol, the actual use of physical force†(www.policecrimes.com). Racism is also a major cause of police brutality. The most famous of all police brutality cases is, of course, Rodney Kings case. On March 3, 1991, four Los Angeles police officers beat Rodney King as eleven other officers stood by watching. Rodney King was in a high-speed car chase with the officers, when his car was finally stopped, he hesitated to get out of his car. When he did, he was said to jump at the officers. He was hit by two darts from a stun gun, which didnt seem to work. Rodney King still refused to obey the officers and lie flat on the ground. But, in less than two minutes, he was hit with 56 baton blows and kicked six times. He suffered from eleven skull fractures, brain damage, broken bones, knocked out teeth and kidney damage. Also, emotional and physical trauma. Not in all cases are the victims of police brutality innocent, obviously, as you can see in Rodney Kings case (law.umkc.edu)But no matter how rude or uncooperative a suspect is being, this extreme force from officers should not be used. Racism has always been and always be around. The fact that it is policing is evident through such acts as these. Sometimes these harmful acts go overlooked by departments, either because of they do not want the publicity, the department might not know what actually happened, or they simply do not care. Racism is not just against African Americans, all minorities are at risk for being the victim of a cops believes or disbelieves. Another reason police brutality happens is some officers believe that its necessary to come down hard on those who resist arrest because they may kill the next police officer who tries to arrest  them so you have to teach them a lesson. â€Å"Another practice is the screen test, police jargon for applying the brakes on a police vehicle to that the handcuffed prisoner in back will be thrown against the metal protective screen†(www.policecrimes.com). When an officer breaks the law and victimizes a person he or she will should be punished and depending on the case they should face suspension, job termination, or even jail time. Those whose rights have been violated often receive large amounts of money in out of court settlements, which means the taxpayer is paying for authorities right to abuse their power . Cops who have committed these acts usually face no serious prosecution, if any at all. So far, of all the documented murders since 1977, only one officer has been convicted of homicide. Any man that kills another, for no matter what reason, should have to face consequences. Anyone can become a victim of police brutality, but the most common are minorities, juveniles, and low class citizens. Minorities are victimized because of their skin color and the believes of the officer they encounter. The fact that officers target minorities has been known for decades. Many races are still not accepted by people today. Juveniles can also become targets of the police. Young adults often find themselves in tough situations getting in trouble with the law. They struggle to find a sense of self and often look to crime as an easy way out. An officer might target a young adult assuming he or she is up to no good, judging solely by the way they carry themselves. Low class citizens often do not have the money for a good lawyer so even if they were victimized they have no one to turn to for help. They most likely do not have guidance on how to properly seek justice they rightfully deserve. Also in most cases, unless there is physical evidence, police misconduct is often on e side of the story against another. In order to prevent police from using unnecessary amount of force on citizens there must be an understanding of each others position on society. Although a beating from a police officer may not be the victims fault, there are some ways to try and prevent from being a part of a traumatic experience. When an officer does not feel threatened he or she is less  likely to become frantic and full of adrenaline which would make the confrontation with him or her less dangerous and beneficial to both the cop and the civilian. The number of cases of police brutality is not as high as the years of the civil rights act, but there is still a need for a way to help fix the problem. Not every case is known to the public and reported. Departments need to properly train officers to deal with certain situations properly. While they might not be perfect when it comes to hiring, they should keep a close eye on those who they hire to make sure any officer hired doesnt have a different personality when on duty.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  According to Freud, people are unable to remember when they are born because it is a traumatic experience, and such experiences are placed in the unconscious, meaning they are forgotten, unintentionally. Being born is a traumatic experience because of the fact that a fetus is, basically, being pulled from an environment that it has gotten used to over the course of nine months. This environment is one in which there was food, warmth, and comfort. When the child is born, it comes into a cold, dry, loud place, totally unlike the warm, muffled sounds of the womb, and it is a shocking experience.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For a newborn, this is not only too much for their brain to process, it shocks them into repression. In sociology, this rapid introduction into a new world is known as culture shock, in which the subject being introduced has no idea where they are or what to do, and there is a type of panic. This panic causes the brain to lose the information, that is called repression. By definition, repression is the process by which the unpleasant or traumatic incident is pushed into the unconscious and forgotten. There are about 100 billion different nerves and receptors in the brain of a newborn, but they work at such a rudimentary level, that they are incapable of holding that information. This could also be a reason why birth is a forgotten part of life and pushed to an unconscious level in the brain. The brain functions as the center of human thought, and those thoughts that are unpleasant, or cause trauma, are, somehow, forgotten. This repression forces those thoughts away from the conscious brain. Some people say that they have dreams of being born, and this is not totally ridiculous. These people have such dreams because the repressed memories are resurfacing in the dream, and people experience these visions. Often times, they do not even remember having the dream or having the sensation of being born because it is a part of the unconscious. Freud says that†¦ repression is one of the strongest and most regularly used defense mechanisms because it is easier to put something out of one’s mind, than to try to ignore it (Wood 433). According to a study by Nelson and Ross in 1980, the following hypothesis was formed: Children would show early childhood amnesia and that this could be tested by comparing obtained e... ...hildren remember very few things that they want to, or the things that have not been repeated throughout their lives. Birth is an event in the life of a child that is very traumatic because of the type of â€Å"culture shock† that they experience. It is a memory that is repressed unintentionally, but is still there, as Freud would tell one, without hesitation. The unconscious controls the instincts of people and reactions to the world around them, and is as much a part of life as the conscious mind or the preconscious mind, but serves the roll of a storage space or closet, in which humans hide their deepest thoughts and most unpleasant thoughts, as well. Those who are able to remember their birth are people that have something called total recall, which means they know and understand everything about their own life history, including the trauma of birth and all the unpleasant events that will follow during their lifetime. How to Create and Use Hashes in Ruby Arrays are not the only way to manage collections of variables in Ruby. Another type of collection of variables is the hash, also called an associative array. A hash is like an array in that its a variable that stores other variables. However, a hash is unlike an array in that the stored variables are not stored in any particular order, and they are retrieved with a key instead of by their position in the collection. Create a Hash With Key/Value Pairs A hash is useful to store what are called key/value pairs. A key/value pair has an identifier to signify which variable of the hash you want to access and a variable to store in that position in the hash. For example, a teacher might store a students grades in a hash. Bobs grade would be accessed in a hash by the key Bob and the variable stored at that location would be Bobs grade. A hash variable can be created the same way as an array variable. The simplest method is to create an empty hash object and fill it with key/value pairs. She was a gifted linguist: in addition to her native Greek, Plutarch reported that she spoke Ethiopian, Trogodyte, Hebraic (probably Aramaic or less likely Hebrew), Arabic, Syrian, Median, and Parthian as well as many others. She undoubtedly read Greek, Egyptian, and Latin, and perhaps others. During Cleopatras early years, her father Ptolemy XII tried to maintain his failing power in Egypt by bribing powerful Romans. In 58 BCE, her father fled Rome to escape the anger of his people for the failing economy. Cleopatra, about 9 years old at the time, likely went with him. Her oldest sister was Berenike IV, and when Ptolemy XII fled, she and her mother Cleopatra VI Tryphaina, and his eldest daughter, Berenice IV, assumed the rulership jointly. When he returned, apparently Cleopatra VI had died, and with the help of Roman forces, Ptolemy XII regained his throne and executed Berenice. Ptolemy then married his son, about 9 years old, to his remaining daughter, Cleopatra, who was by this time about 18. Rule and Political Strife On the death of Ptolemy XII in February or March of 51 BCE, the rule of Egypt was to go to Cleopatra and her brother and husband, Ptolemy XIII; but Cleopatra moved swiftly to take control, but not without issues.  Ã‚   When Cleopatra VII took the double crown, Egypt was still facing the financial issues that her predecessors had created- Julius Caesar was owed 17.5 million drachmas- and there was still scattered civil strife. Drought, failed crops, and food shortages were becoming more serious, and by 48 BCE the Nile flood was extremely low. Cleopatra set about restoring the bull cult; but the largest issue was the presence in her kingdom of Ptolemy XIII, only about 11 years old at the time. Ptolemy had the support of his tutor Potheinos and a powerful set of advisers, including many of the top generals, and by the autumn of 50 BCE, Ptolemy XIII was in the dominant position in the country.  At the same time, Pompey- with whom Ptolemy XII had allied himself- appeared in Egypt, chased by forces of Julius Caesar. In 48 BCE, Pompey named Ptolemy XIII the sole ruler, and Cleopatra went first to Thebes, then to Syria to gather an army of supporters among the opponents of Pompey, but her army was halted in the Nile delta region at Pelousion by Ptolemys forces. In the meantime, Ptolemys advisers were becoming alarmed at the rise in turmoil in the Roman Empire, and seeking to back away from that conflict, they had Pompey assassinated and his head sent to Caesar. Shortly thereafter, Julius Caesar arrived in Alexandria. He sent messages to Cleopatra and Ptolemy, asking them to disband their armies and reconcile with one another; Ptolemy kept his army but came to Alexandria, while Cleopatra set messengers and then came herself to see Caesar. Cleopatra and Julius Caesar Cleopatra, according to the stories, had herself delivered to Julius Caesars presence in a rug and won his support. Ptolemy XIII died in a battle with Caesar, and Caesar restored Cleopatra to power in Egypt, along with her brother Ptolemy XIV as co-ruler. In 46 BCE, Cleopatra named her newborn son Ptolemy Caesarion, emphasizing that this was the son of Julius Caesar. Caesar never formally accepted paternity, but he did take Cleopatra to Rome that year, also taking her sister, Arsinoe, and displaying her in Rome as a war captive. That he was already married (to Calpurnia) yet Cleopatra claimed to be his wife added to political tensions in Rome that ended with Caesars assassination in 44 BCE. After Caesars death, Cleopatra returned to Egypt, where her brother and co-ruler Ptolemy XIV died, probably assassinated by her. She established her son as her co-ruler Ptolemy XV Caesarion. Cleopatra and Marc Antony When the next Roman military governor of the region, Marc Antony, demanded her presence- along with that of other rulers who were controlled by Rome- she arrived dramatically in 41 BCE and managed to convince him of her innocence of charges about her support of Caesars supporters in Rome, captivated his interest, and gained his support. Antony spent a winter in Alexandria with Cleopatra (41–40 BCE) and then left. Cleopatra bore twins to Antony. He, meanwhile, went to Athens and, his wife Fulvia having died in 40 BCE, agreed to marry Octavia, the sister of his rival Octavius. They had a daughter in 39 BCE. In 37 BCE Antony returned to Antioch, Cleopatra joined him, and they went through a sort of marriage ceremony the following year. That year of that ceremony, another son was born to them, Ptolemy Philadelphus. Marc Antony formally restored to Egypt- and Cleopatra- territory which the Ptolemys had lost control of, including Cyprus and part of what is now Lebanon. Cleopatra returned to Alexandria and Antony joined her in 34 BCE after a military victory. He affirmed the joint rulership of Cleopatra and her son, Caesarion, recognizing Caesarion as the son of Julius Caesar. Octavian and Death Antonys relationship with Cleopatra- his supposed marriage and their children, and his granting of territory to her- was used by the Roman emperor Octavian to raise Roman concerns over his loyalties. Antony was able to use Cleopatras financial support to oppose Octavian in the Battle of Actium (31 BCE), but missteps- probably attributable to Cleopatra- led to defeat. Cleopatra tried to get Octavians support for her childrens succession to power but was unable to come to an agreement with him. In 30 BCE, Marc Antony killed himself, reportedly because hed been told that Cleopatra had been killed, and when yet another attempt to keep power failed, Cleopatra killed herself. Legacy Much of what we know about Cleopatra was written after her death when it was politically expedient to portray her as a threat to Rome and its stability. Thus, some of what we know about Cleopatra may have been exaggerated or misrepresented by those sources. Cassius Dio, one of the ancient sources that tell her story, summarizes her story as She captivated the two greatest Romans of her day, and because of the third she destroyed herself. What we know for certain is that Egypt became a province of Rome, ending the rule of the Ptolemies. Cleopatras children were taken to Rome. Caligula later executed Ptolemy Caesarion, and Cleopatras other sons simply disappear from history and are assumed to have died. While I was driving home, I was all alone in my car and there was not another car to be seen on the open highway and I wanted so bad to see how fast my car would go. So, not using my brain, I floored my car and took off flying! It felt absolutely amazing at that moment when I hit 100 miles per hour and kept right on going. It was so fantastic and such a rush until I got the scare of my life. All of a sudden I saw blue lights in my rear view mirror and went from elation to immediate fright. I was scared to death and knew I was caught. I was so nervous with butterflies in my stomach and thought I might even mess my pants! I knew then that all I could do now was to be as respectful as I could when the officer walked up to me. I was literally shaking, I was so scared. The officer was very nice about the whole thing, but he in fact clocked me at 112 in a 55 mile per hour zone. He informed me that he could very well arrest me and take me to jail right there on the spot. I was so thankful that he chose to call my parents instead. He did however issue me 2 misdemeanors and a date for court. My dad has a good friend that works for our local sheriffs office and my parents had my butt in his office first thing that following Monday morning and I got an awakening on what it is like to be locked up and got a really long lecture and lessons about how an automobile at that speed can be worse than any weapon. I never really thought before that a car can truly be a weapon, but when they got through with me, I completely understood how I could of not only put my own life in grave danger, but that I put other lives in danger as well. This could of cost me greatly, I could very well have gone to jail if not of even cost my own life or the life of an innocent person on the road that night. I could of lost my license completely and not been able to drive again for a long time, and the money for court and attorneys fees will no doubt cost my parents a great deal (which I have no doubt they will make me pay back). But in the meantime, I decided to make some of my own punishments and am working at least 10 or more hours per week doing voluntary community service at my local fire station. I have been working my tail off washing fire trucks, sweeping floors, washing garage doors, mopping, painting and on and on. I dont know yet what the true consequences will be out of all this, because I havent gone to court yet and faced the judge. But I do know that the second scariest thing, after seeing those blue lights behind me that night, will be facing that judge. I am truly scared and ashamed to face my actions. I can only hope that all the voluntary community service I am doing before that time comes will help the judge understand how bad I feel. I am sharing this story because I need others to realize that any automobile can easily be used as a weapon and has the potential to harm people. I want everyone to know, as I do now that the speed limits are there to protect lives and not just to keep us from having fun with our cars. Water hardness is the amount of calcium and magnesium ions in water. The expression that represents water hardness is parts per million (ppm). The best measurement suited for bread baking is aro und 100 to 150 (ppm) of minerals; medium hardness. Flour, water, and yeast all work as a team to produce good, strong bread dough. There is a process of bread making. This process starts off with mixing, combining, stirring these ingredients. The yeast and flour have enzymes within them. As the sugars are metabolized, carbon dioxide and alcohol are released into the bread dough, making it rise (Phillips, Scott). Carbon Dioxide will begin to inflate the bubble only if the dough has a strong and elastic gluten network. The more the tiny air cells fill with carbon dioxide, the more the dough rises. When making bread, it is best to develop as much gluten, a type of protein within flour, as you can because the gluten strengthens the dough. It also holds in any gases to help the bread rise. The bread dough is then tucked and stretched into a round to give it a smooth outside. This smooth cover, outside, top, or shelter traps the gases produced by fermentation. The dough is then put aside for approximately ten to fifteen minutes. Sitting aside allows the gluten bonds relax. The process of shaping the dough at last is then made easier. This process isnt necessary and isnt taken by all baker s, but is very beneficial. Fermentation starts off with the enzymes in the yeast breaking down starch into flavorful sugars. The sugar in the yeast is then used to produce carbon dioxide, alcohol, and a lot of byproducts. Amylose and maltose break down into glucose and proteins break down into amino acids. First, pinch off a piece of dough. Then, the dough is grasped on opposite sides with both hands. Next, the dough should be spread apart approximately three to five centimeters. The dough is supposed to look a certain way after this. Its supposed to look like a window with a window-like membrane in the center. The dough most likely will come out either two ways. If the dough tears or doesnt stretch easily, it needs to be kneaded more. If it forms a window-like membrane and stretches easily, the process of kne ading is over. The next main step is to proof the dough followed by dividing, knocking back the dough. The fifth step is to finally proof the dough. This step involves shaping the dough into the desired shape and leaving the dough to rise in an environment where it is warm and moist until the dough raises almost doubles in size. Last, but certainly not least, bake the dough so it can form into a loaf. When the bread is baked in a hot, preheated oven, the best way to check if the bread is completely done is by tapping it on the base with your knuckle. The bread is baked completely if it sounds hollow. The bread should then be put on a wire rack to cool. A cigarette is a cylindrical roll of finely cut tobacco used for smoking. Cigarettes now a days include ammonia (household cleaner), arsenic (used in rat poisons), butane (gas, used in lighter fluid), DDT (a banned insecticide), Naphthalene (ingredient in mothballs), etc. These ingredients are death threats. One ingredient that killed over 2,000 people in Bhopal, India after being accidentally released is Methyl Isocyanate. Carbon monoxide (a gas in car exhausts), copper (electric wiring), tar (road surfaces), acetone (paint stripper), benzene (petrol fumes), formaldehyde (embalming fluid), methanol (rocket fluid), and radon (radioactive gas), etc make up a cigarette as well. These arent all of the negative substances within a cigarette, but these are key ones. Nicotine is composed of several chemicals. These chemicals have substantial effects on the human body. Together these chemicals can cause nicotine overdose. Nicotine gives a sense of relaxation and recovery because of the changing of the shape of the body and brain function. Nicotine is addictive. It is a depressant. It is nicotine that is the addictive substance in tobacco. Over the past 100 years, the tobacco industry has been tweaked to get smokers hooked more effectively. Ammonia may not seem like it has anything to do with tobacco let along cigarettes, but the additive in cigarettes aids in the lungs absorbing cigarette smoke quicker. This explains why people get higher from cigarettes. Ammonia is also a substance used to clean toilets. Chocolate is an addition to cigarettes. The effect it has on the body isnt nowhere near the effect other things have. It is only in a cigarette to take away the bitter taste. It also potentially puts off the natural tobacco taste. Not only do cigarettes affect the people that smoke them, but they affect the people and environment in the surrounding areas as well. The affect of other people is called second-hand smoking. Second-hand smoking is when someone who doesnt smoke ingests more than 4,000 hazardous compounds as well as the smoker. Second-hand smoke is more dangerous than smoking. Cigarette smoke contains small amounts of radioactive materials. These radioactive materials are inhaled by non-smokers and smoker into their lungs. They build up and overtime and as they increase they become a big dose of radiation. Cigarette smoke influences the atmosphere around big time. The actual cigarette bud and smoke affect the environment the most. Cigarette buds and smoke result in air, water and in addition land pollution. Cigarette smoke and buds are considered one of the number one contributors to the environmental pollution. They effect the environment in several of ways. Cigarette buds affect the water because numerous amounts of them are left on the ground. Most of them end up pushed down into the lakes by wind, water, etc. A lot of animals such as fish eat these buds believing they are food. This eats away at the insides of these living organisms. The rest of the buds that dont go anywhere and stay on the ground are there for an extremely long time. Cigarette buds dont decompose fast. It takes them approximately twenty five to twenty six years to decompose. These buds left in the grass pollute the plants and soil by being leached into the soil. Cigarette buds can also contribute to the start of a fire. Especially during dry season fires are likely to happen. Cigarette smoke affects the human body extremely. The cigarette smoke increases and accelerates the aging process in the human body. Smoking also causes dieses in nearly every organ in the human body. A hazardous disease such as lung cancer can kill you. Cigarettes contain tar and low-tar cigarettes do not reduce the risk of lung cancer. Smoking causes 90% of lung cancer deaths in men and 80% in women according to statistics. When you inhale smoke, it automatically affects your lungs. Another disease that is easily given than taken is Crohns disease. Cigarette smoking for weight loss has widely been used as an appetite suppressant. Cigarette smoke has a negative effect on it. Patients with Crohns disease have a higher risk at relapses and repeated surgeries. These patients need more treatment such as aggressive and immunosuppressive treatment. If a smoker stops smoking, the risk at having Crohns disease is still there. Smokers have a higher risk at developing a peptic ulcer, a liver disease, heartburn, etc. Nicotine affects the brain in major way. Eukaryotic organisms have a nucleus which is the brain of a cell. Nicotine affects the brain by decreasing the supply of blood to the brain and its cells. Blood is transferred to the brain by the carotid artery. There are many arteries that supply blood to the brain, but the main artery is the carotid artery. The amount of diseases given with smoking to the human body varies. There are numerous fatal diseases associated with smoking; long term and also inhaling second-hand smoke. Some examples of these diseases are within the cancer family. Smoking causes cancer within the mouth, throat, larynx, lung, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, and bladder. It also causes cancers of the stomach acute myeloid leukemia, and cervix. Blood cancer is diagnosed during a cystoscopy when a biopsy is done. The process involves a certain instrument which is passed through the tube. The next layer consists of the muscle layer. The muscles in the muscle layer push the food down to the stomach. The last layer, outer layer, covers the esophagus. Kidney cancer is when cells within kidney tissue dont. These cells eventually create a tumor. There are different types of kidney cancers. Those different types include Rena Cell Carcinoma (RCC), Transitional Cell Carcinoma, Renal Sarcoma, and Wilms Tumor. RCC is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. Transitional Cell Carcinoma usually begins in the renal pelvis. Renal Sarcoma is the least common form of kidney cancer. Wilms tumor is the most common type of kidney cancer in children. The pharynx is the throat in the neck. The voice box contains the vocal chords. Majority Laryngeal cancer form in squamous cells. There are three main parts of the larynx which are the supraglottis, glottis, and subglottis. The supraglottis is the upper part of the larynx located above the vocal chords. Glottis is the middle part in the same area where the vocal chords are. The lowest part of the larynx is the subglottis. The subglottis is located between the vocal chords and trachea. The trachea is also known as the windpipe. The use of all tobacco products can affect the risk of developing Laryngeal cancer. Ear pain and a sore throat are symptoms of Laryngeal cancer. Hoarseness within the voice and a lump in the neck or throat are symptoms as well. A doctor should immediately be acknowledged if any of th ese symptoms take place especially a lump in the neck or throat. There are four stages to this disease and the stage affects the treatment options. When a certain stage is reached, treatment isnt guaranteed to prevent any tragedy such as death. Oral cancer is a subtype of head and neck cancer. It is any cancerous tissue growth located in the mouth. Oral cancer can affect any are of the mouth. The mouth is also known as the oral cavity. This are includes the lips, gum tissues, tongue, cheek lining, and the hard and possible soft palate. According to statistics, oral cancer kills one person every five hours. This disease is greatly influenced by smoking cigarettes mainly because the cigarette is smoked used by lips and the chemicals travel throughout the mouth to the throat. Just like majority of other cancers, treating oral cancer depends on the size of the cancer and the stage that the cancer is in. Men have a higher risk of being diagnosed with oral cancer. Symptoms of oral cancer include tiny white or red spots, swelling of the jaw, a sore that doesnt heal within two weeks or bleeds immediately, etc. In oral cancers early stages, it is hard to detect the cancer because known of the symptoms take place. Theres neither pain nor red and white bumps inside the mouth that can be related to oral cancer. Pancreatic cancer is cancer in the pancreas which is a 6-inch long organ located behind the stomach in the back of the abdomen. The pancreas contains exocrine and endocrine glands. The classification of pancreatic cancer depends on whether it affects the exocrine or the endocrine functions of the pancreas. A gland that secretes externally through a duct is an exocrine gland. An endocrine gland is any of the glands of the endocrine system that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. The most common type of pancreatic cancer is tumors that affect the exocrine functions. These tumors are called either cystadenomas or adenocarcinomas. The uncommon tumors in pancreatic cancer are tumors that affect the endocrine functions. These tumors are called neuroendocrine or islet cell tumors. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer consists of pale or grey stool, excess fat in stool, pain in the upper abdomen, dark urine, yellowness in the skin or eyes, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, etc. Pain i n the upper abdomen comes from the tumor pushing against nerves. Mold is a fungus. Mold can be found indoors and outdoors. Mold is a living organism. It reproduces. Mold reproduces by creating mold spores. Mold spores can be thought of as seeds. Mold spores are necessary for mold to reproduce. They can form anywhere and can enter houses through cracks, windows, door-ways, etc. Four major elements contribute to mold growth indoors and three of those elements contribute to outdoor mold growth. The four elements that contribute to indoor mold growth are temperature, food source, oxygen, and water. Water, temperature, and oxygen are needed in order for outdoor mold to grow. Mold feeds off of all types of cellulose materials. For instance, mold feeds on wood, fabrics, wall paper, etc. Mold grows in temperatures that range between 40 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This fungus does need air to advance, but it grows best in area with poor ventilation. Mold needs water, moisture, or high humidity in order to develop. Mold travels by mold spores. They spread through air, water, or by hitching a ride on a host. The hosts that mold spores happen to latch on to are items such as clothing, insects, and humans. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by micro fungi that are capable of causing disease and death in humans and other animals. These mycotoxins enter the body two ways. They are inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Mold is an allergy for a lot of people. Mold can provide nasal congestion, eye or skin irritation, or wheezing. More severe reactions are possible if the human body cant take the fungus or fight off the bacteria. Shortness of breath and fevers are considered severe reactions to mold that may occur in a person whom has severe allergies. Some people may develop mold infections in their lungs like obstructive lung disease if they have chronic lung illnesses. When high amounts of airborne toxic mold spores are inhaled deep into the lungs they can enter the bloodstream and affect so many different things. The immune system, nervous system, liver, kidneys, and blood can be affected. This can cause brain damage. The immune system is made up of organs, tissues, and cells that work together as a network. They work together to protect the body. The cells in the immune system, white blood cells or leukocytes, are divided into two main groups. The two basic types of leukocytes are phagocytes and lymphocytes. They combine together to seek out and destroy disease-causing substances and organisms. Phagocytes are cells that chew up invading organisms and lymphocytes are cells that allow the body to remember and recognize previous invaders. Lymphocytes help the body destroy them. Neutrophil is the most common type of phagocytes. Immunity is the ability to resist a particular toxin by the action of specific antibodies. The human body has three types of immunity. The three types include innate, adaptive, and passive. Innate is natural immunity and everyone is born with it. Adaptive immunity or active immunity develops throughout the life of a human. Passive immunity is borrowed from another source. It doesnt last long. The immune system does have problems. The disorders fall into four main categories. The first two categories are immunodeficiency disorders and autoimmune disorders the next two are allergic disorders and cancers of the immune system. Autoimmune disorders are when the immune system attacks its own tissue as foreign matter. Allergic disorders are when the immune system overreacts in response to an antigen. If the brain is damaged, the rest of the body doesnt operate the same because the job of the brain is to control everything. The forebrain, midbrain, and hind brain are the three segments that the brain is divided into. The brain, nerves, and the spinal cord are all connected by the brain stem. The spinal cord finds the association neuron. A sensory neuron informs the body of its environment. It serves as an integration or interpretation center of sensory neurons and motor neurons. The association neuron interprets the informati on and responds to the environment with the motor neuron. In the circulatory system, blood vessels are the highways of the human body. When something molds, its not in a good condition. Tobacco smoke has an uncountable amount of toxins within it. These toxins travel throughout the blood in the human body. There are two types of blood vessels. Arterial arteries are one and venous veins are the other ones. Capillaries are minute vessels. They allow oxygen and nutrients to traverse through their walls to all the body cells. The tissue of arteries has different textures. They are tough on the outside, muscular in the middle, and smooth on the inside. There are two venae cavae. They are the two largest veins in the body. They carry the deoxygenated blood to the right side of the heart. The tissues of the veins are thin, and not as flexible nor muscular than the arteries. The heart is the center of the circulatory system. It is located behind the breastbone and centered perpendicular to the midline of the chest. The heart receives oxygen from the lungs and has two parts. The heart has its own circulation network that is made up of arteries and veins. The upper chamber of the heart is called the atrium and the lower chamber of the heart is called the ventricle. The picture on the right is an illustration of the upper chamber and the image on the left is a picture of the lower chamber of the heart. Both chambers have two parts. The atrium has two auricles, the left and right auricle. Both auricles hold cache for blood that enters the heart. A symptom of heart disease is heart palpitation which is a feeling that that the heart is beating too fast or too hard, skipping a beat, too slow, or fluttering. When the heart beat isnt consistent meaning the heart beat is irregular, heart disease could possibly be the outcome. Cardiovascular diseases in which include heart disease, is the number one killer of women. There are different types of strokes. Ischemic strokes are the main kinds of strokes that occur. The other strokes are hemorrhagic strokes. Ischemic strokes are when there is a physical blockage of blood traveling to the brain. This causes the brain cells in the area to die. Hemorrhagic strokes are the sudden onset of neurological symptoms as a result of bleeding in the brain. This type of stroke can easily increase the pressure inside of the brain. This can lead to brain damage. There are some people that dont recover from brain damage and eventually become brain dead which means their body cant function anymore. Specific items in tobacco smoke can damage important genes that control cell growth. If a cell doesnt grow completely and substantially correct, it doesnt function right. If tobacco smoke and mold can affect the human body in such a way, it definitely can affect bread. Those whom smoke and are addicted to smoking crave the nicotine. They know the cigarettes are constantly harming the human body, but an addiction isnt easy to overcome. When a smoker smokes, they usually dont gain a lot of weight. This is because the substances and chemicals in the cigarette stunt the growth and development. On bread, smoke stunts the growth of mold. This is explains why bread cigarette smoke does affect the mold growth on bread more than air does. This is very ironic because most people wouldnt think the air that humans breathe in could impact bread in such a negative way more than cigarette smoke. Mold- a large and taxonomically diverse number of fungal species where their growth results in a moldy appearance of objects, especially foods. Kirtrine's Basement "Sister Lopez?" I looked down the winding staircase into the murky depths of my neighbor's unfinished basement. "Sister Lopez, can I talk to you?" The only sound was the steady hum of the sewing machine, so I quietly took the stairs two at a time. I was twelve years old--polite and refined, but not overly patient. My mother, a wonderful but slightly overzealous Mormon Relief Society president, had sent me with a Homemaking invitation to give to the ever-elusive, inactive Sister Lopez. Sister Lopez was sitting at a large table, feeding canvas into a huge sewing machine. The only light in the room was the leftover sun that managed to squeeze through the window well. It illuminated her hair which fell to her shoulders like blackberry satin. I watched her look up at me with only mild curiosity. "Hello." "Hello... I wanted to give you this." "Thanks. The novel by Mark Twain, or Samuel Clemens, has many themes that relate to society today. Even today society continues to talk about whether the novel should be read amongst high- school curriculums. Society is also continuing to deal with racism, and its effects on the lives of African-Americans. Another theme that is prevalent in society is lying among American children. Huck Finn is a self taught liar, and a very good one at that. On the raft, while floating down the Mississippi, Huck has an opportunity to exercise his gift for lying. The boy enjoys mendacity; he lies for the sake of lying and keeps the reader turning the page piling on one fiction after another. Just before the runaways get started, Huck visits a neighboring town to get information and encounters a farmer's wife. He is dressed in an old dress and is pretending to be a young girl searching for her relatives. The woman suspects his sex and tries various devices to ascertain if her suspicions are true. Among these is threading a needle and throwing a bar of lead at the rats which swarm around the house. Finally she makes Huck own up that he is a boy. In any case, this is a great example of a young boy lying until his nose is a foot long. Lying is prevalent among today's children as well. Racism has an obvious connection to today's society. In the novel Huck says many "racist" comments. In this scene Aunt Sally hears of a steamboat explosion. "Good gracious! anybody hurt?" she asks. "No'm," comes the answer. "Killed a nigger." Aunt Sally later refers to the "nigger" as if they are not even a person, regarding the death as if it did not even matter. "Well, it's lucky because sometimes people do get hurt." At first glance at the novel Huckleberry Finn, many would protest to the explicit use of the "N" word which was used over two-hundred times. As a result Huck Finn, one of the greatest American novels is noteworthy.

Abstract In this essay you will learn about the Korean War conflict and how it ended and what went wrong. Also how the United States deals with the conflict of the Korean War. How did this war affect American sensibilities, including the way Americans viewed the war and themselves? There were many different consequences occurred as a result of the Korean Conflict, which ended in 1953, with thousands of fatalities but no clear victor and no peace treaty signed. The north continued to be occupied by communist forces, and the South becomes an American ally. Also, Korea illustrated how a relatively contained conflict could turn into a much broader regional conflagration. As the conflict escalated, there were points in time in which China and the Soviet Union could have conceivably been drawn into the conflict, potentially resulting in another regional, or even general war. Perhaps most importantly, Korea illustrated how tension between the U.S.S.R. and the United States could become full-scale conflicts. Other long-term consequences include the establishment of permanent nuclear installations in South Korea and the commitment of conventional U.S. military equipment and troops to South Korea for decades afterwards. Did the war change America’s world and why? Other important legislative changes include the passage of the War Power Act (1973), requiring U.S. presidents to receive explicit approval from Congress before forces could be deployed overseas for combat purposes. Politically, the conflict resulted in an aversion to further American casualties, which fundamentally changed U.S. intervention in later international conflicts. The Democratic party also experienced serious consequences in 1968. Democratic voters, split over U.S. involvement in Vietnam, divided their votes between Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace, resulting in a Republican presidential victory a Democratic party whose politics were changed fundamentally. Economically, the Vietnam Conflict resulted in inflation as spending for Vietnam continued, but the United States remunerated largely through monetizing of the money supply. Because the Americans did not know if the Korean War was over or not so the Americans try to go on with their lives but it was hard to do so. Was the outcome of the war beneficial or detrimental to the United States (or a combination of both)? I do believe that the Korean War was beneficial to the United States than it was detrimental. The United States gained knowledge from the Korean War; it was beneficial to them in the long run. The United States also gained awareness from the War. The United States of America became aware and more understanding of the â€Å"falling domino† effect of communism. After the Korean War the United States rearmed and become a world power and the United States realized that they needed to double the size of their army.
